About Mariann Hegedus
I was born in Hungary. I graduated from Art school in 1997. At school, I learned different techniques and mediums which led me to specialize in textile and traditional weaving. I moved to Canada in 2001, but not having a loom here for weaving, I was looking to find other creative outlets to fulfil my passion. Taking various courses got me into making jewellery from horsehair, quilting, wet and needle felting and leatherwork. Having children, especially when they were young didn’t leave a lot of time for creativity. I was working mostly with wool, felting, creating 3D pictures, sculptures, and toys. I always loved being around children so it was natural to me that I wanted to pass on my knowledge. This led me to teaching handwork at Waldorf schools, running fibre and leather crafting workshops, private lessons and children’s camps, from home and at various locations. The sense of self accomplishment makes leather crafting a very rewarding activity amongst children and adults alike. After living in Ottawa for almost 20 years, I decided to find a place where I can be closer to nature, as well as have a place for mounted archery and horses, which is my other passion, knowing that my ancestors were the Huns. A year and a half years ago, I moved to Bowman, Quebec, to a 40 acre property. I’m working on building up my business, teaching ground archery (instinct shooting), running leather workshops, as well as day camps and retreats. Now, I have the opportunity to be inspired by the calmness of the quiet nature which surrounds me. I incorporate this into my work. I love going to fairs and craft shows and markets to sell my product and meet people, fellow vendors, and also build community and friendships. I take personalized orders and spend a lot of time discussing, creating, designing the piece my customers wish to have. I make sure the finished product resonates with them. I use vegetable tanned leather as the raw material. I create a template for the product, draw the design, and transfer it to the piece. I tool the leather design with various leather tools, dye and paint the design and the background using leather dyes and acrylic paint. Then I apply a finishing coat to the item, as well as to the edges to finalize the product and make it last for generations. You can check out my FB page Taltos archery and leather to see more of my finished products.
